Event introduction

Background

On the shelves of some supermarkets you can already see that a change is taking place in disposable plates, cutlery and straws. Up until a few years ago, these products were almost exclusively made of plastic - but now other materials are finding their way into these product category. The reason for this is not only the increased awareness of consumers with regard to sustainability, but also the Single Use Plastic Directive (SUPD), which will come into force on July 3rd, 2021.

With this regulation, the German government is following EU Directive 2019/904 on reducing the impact of certain plastic products on the environment. Affected product scopes are cotton swabs, cutlery, plates, drinking straws, stirrers and balloon sticks made of plastic as well as to-go food containers, beverage cups and containers made of Styrofoam.
